A Pantheon fansite dedicated to Vinod Chanda
Vinod Chanda (विनोद चन्द) is a fictional character from the 2022 animated sci-fi drama series Pantheon, based on short stories about Uploaded Intelligence written by author Ken Liu. He is portrayed by British actor and singer Raza Jaffrey and is based on Nils Chanda, a warmongering antagonist from the short stories who seeks to plunge the world into nuclear war due to his hatred of mankind. One of Pantheon's three protagonists, Vinod Chanda, is a brilliant engineer who seeks a utopian society through the development of Uploaded Intelligence. Kidnapped and made into an Uploaded Intelligence, enslaved in the hands of his boss, Ajit Prasad, Chanda breaks free with the aid of Prasad's previous uploads, going rogue and being driven by the desire to get what he wants by any means necessary.
Chanda is mostly well-received for his character depth, complex story and characterization, antagonistic role, voice acting, and tragic story. However, a common criticism is his reduced screen time, especially in the show's second season, due to time constraints. In an interview with Ken Liu from the Book and Film Globe, Liu states that Craig Silverstein, creator of Pantheon, wanted to turn Chanda into a "real character, " having done "all of the work needed to make that happen" as Nils Chanda was not a well-rounded character in the short stories.
Pantheon is an American adult animated science fiction drama series, centered around the concept of Uploaded Intelligence (UI), the process of uploading minds to the Cloud. Created by Craig Silverstein, Pantheon is based on the short stories of author Ken Liu about the technological singularity. It follows three protagonists: Maddie Kim (Katie Chang), a bereaved girl mourning the loss of her father who finds out the truth about her father David (Daniel Dae Kim), whose consciousness has been uploaded to the Cloud, Caspian Keyes (Paul Dano), a sullen, yet bright teenager who aids Maddie in finding the truth about her father out and gradually learns another truth, one about his abusive home life, and Vinod Chanda (Raza Jaffrey), a brilliant, idealistic engineer uploaded against his will who goes rogue after being enslaved. The three are all caught in a global conspiracy surrounding Uploaded Intelligence and its effects on the world with large-scale consequences for not just them, but for the world.
The show was well-received for its writing, philosophical and narrative depth, voice acting, and portrayals of the singularity as well as discussion of geopolitical and philosophical topics. It premiered on AMC+ in September 2022, with the second season premiering on Amazon Prime on October 2023 in Australia and New Zealand, and in November 2024 and February 2025, both seasons were globally released on Netflix.
